what children say about brain-based learning

ALPS is fun. I like to write long stories and read them to everyone. Then they all clap and I smile. I learn to use good phrases and proverbs to make my story interesting so it's not boring and it doesn't go on and on and on and on.  Joanne, age 6

I like using my brain. It is very powerful. So is Rohan's brain, because he's my best friend. Gavin, age 4

What's it like having Mrs. Call for a teacher? Well, it's fun! She makes everything easy even if it’s tricky. She goes “Der!” and that means, “You can do it, just use your brain in a different way!” And when you use your brain, YOU CAN DO IT! She gives us silly stickers when we do good spellings and the figures on them are funny. She is always full of laughter. She always claps if you do a good job on using your brain. Mrs. Call is fun. I like looking at pictures of Henry her horse.   Love from Amy, age 7 xxx

When I was five years old Mrs. Call taught me how to read properly and confidently using brain-based learning. I didn't know that was what it was, but I knew that it was different to what other teachers did. Until she taught me, I thought reading was hard. She made it such fun that I didn't notice that I was learning! She also taught me how to write creative pieces to a good enough standard to win competitions at school. Her way of teaching was great and what she taught me has stayed with me for nine years. Christopher, age 13

I used to think that spelling was hard and I didn't really like it.  Now I get good marks and it's easy. I used to hate homework because it was so boring and you just had to do it, but now I think it's fun.  Matthew, age 9

When I had Mrs. Call for a teacher I was happy and confident in myself. She talked me through things and she would draw pictures or write down information to help me. Kids learn in different ways, and she knew the way that each child’s brain worked. She teaches you how your brain works so you can make it powerful. She is the best teacher I've ever had. Mrs. Call is really kind and generous to me. I write to her in America to tell her how I'm doing  in secondary school and she always writes back.  Emily, age 12

When you learn with Accelerated Learning you learn to use your brain. You make it powerful. You succeed and you know what you will do when you get older. You have targets and you celebrate when you reach them. You feel good about school and you feel confident and clever.  Dinesh, age 10

When I went into Year 6, I was worried that other kids would hold me back. But our new teacher used Accelerated Learning, and everyone changed their attitude. Lessons were more fun and I could really concentrate and learn fast. I knew that if I wanted to get a good job, like in the police force or a sports teacher, I needed to learn a lot. The more I learned, the more interested I was in learning more, like GCSE stuff from books and the computer.  I want a good education. I need to be in classes where everyone works hard, and I need the teacher to use methods to help all the kids achieve highly. Stephen,  age 13

Mrs. Call taught me a long time ago but I still remember! She made up ways of teaching more complex ideas and making them easy to remember, such as onomatopoeia, by using rhymes or pictures or symbols to help.   But she wasn't flawless - I managed to catch her out once on oxymorons, but compared to how many times she caught me out that was nothing! I can always remember different devices in work now so I can attain the higher grades. Andrew, age 16
